Residential Childrens Care Home U3A Dénia's good cause

Background
Centro de Acogida de Menores is a residential home for children who have been taken into care for various reasons. The home is funded by the Valencian government for staff, running costs, food etc. but there is no budget available for repairs or decorating. The home is very well run, clean and a pleasant environment for the children.
U3A Dénia adopted the home as our 'good cause' and a group of volunteers was formed who were willing to decorate the home. The volunteers held their first meeting on Wednesday 16th November 2011 to decide on a plan of action. They visited the home and met the lady in charge, Pilar, who was delighted to show them round and to see where they could help. With the assistance of Enric Gil and Marcela Server Lorente from the International Relations Department at the Ajuntament de Dénia a plan was formulated. Through the generosity of our members, we have been able to treat the children to a family day out every summer as well as buying special Christmas presents for each of the 25+ resident children in the home.

Latest News
Catamaran Trip on Monday 14th September when 61 members of Dénia U3A enjoyed an evening Catamran trip along with 22 children from the Care Home who were accompanied by 4 carers. The weather was very kind to us and, judging by the number of photographs sent to me, everyone thoroughly enjoyed the event.

Summer Outing
Thank you to all U3A Dénia members who contributed towards the summer outing. This year the children chose to have a ‘family’ mini break at a youth hostel in Moraira which has it’s own swimming pool which, was very much appreciated, as well at being close to the beach. The children travelled to Teulada by train from Dénia then they were transported to Moraira in a fleet of cars. The little ones loved the experience of the train journey. At the hostel the carers organised games and events for the evening followed by an evening meal. They then slept in bedrooms with bunk beds with a carer staying in each bedroom which held the younger children. After breakfast they began another morning of fun:
The four carers who went with the children thoroughly enjoyed being able to spend so much time with the children as normally they work shifts – so it was so nice for them to be able to play games and have fun outside of the home environment.
The children and staff have asked that I pass on their thanks to the members of the U3A who continue to create such happy memories for these children.

Fund Raising
A collection bucket is placed on the stage during the September, October and November Member's Meetings to allow the members to contribute for the children's Christmas presents and Christmas party.

The Auction
To help raise funds for the children an anual auction is organised. A very big thankyou to Alan and his team and to all the U3A Dénia members who generously donated items for the sale and to the small team of volunteers who collected and stored the items prior to delivering them to the auction.
Many thanks again to everyone who continue to support this project.

Extiende Tu Mano

This is a charity that provides meals for currently forty four adults and twenty two children of Dénia and makes sure the children go to school having had a nutritious breakfast and with a packed lunch. The U3a Dénia have, at all their member's meeting, a table where gifts of food can be left to assist this important social enterprise.
